Larian Studios Announce a Fresh Divinity, Labeling it Their Largest RPG to Date

The anticipation surrounding The Game Awards reached a fever pitch, particularly after host Geoff Keighley posted a puzzling image of a strange statue. The question is finally answered. The acclaimed developer is developing a completely new Divinity game.

Titled simply Divinity, the game was presented with a daring trailer featuring striking imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to scenes of revelry and the very descent into chaos.

A Different Direction

For those expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. The studio warned that a third Original Sin game to its critically acclaimed RPGs is not on the cards right now.

That said, the developer described this new Divinity as a continuation of the main series. This phrasing implies that the team is likely crafting a more action-oriented experience instead of another tactical title. For now, we can only guess, as only a cinematic trailer is available.

A Pillar of Modern RPGs

The Divinity series is universally respected and many say it pioneered the contemporary revival of deep computer role-playing games. These games are known for intricate stories, branching plots, and complex character building—elements that recently reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its world is classic fantasy, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust given to the player.

In contrast to modern RPGs have simplified options, Divinity is packed with niche playthroughs you can achieve if you're playing as a specific type of character with a unique decision path.

The series is also wonderfully flexible, letting players to improvise both in story and combat. Most missions can be approached in diverse methods, often in surprising fashion.

  • You might solve a puzzle because you recalled something an animal companion shared.
  • Or, you could overcome an obstacle by teleporting a glob of lava in a unorthodox way.

The Journey Continues

It is precisely these elements that have cemented the series to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games of all time. Now, fans can anticipate another adventure in this groundbreaking franchise.
